The Process of Therapy

What is Therapy / Counselling?

Therapy is essentially entering into relationship with a person skilled in recognizing and confronting maladaptive behaviours and patterns. The client usually enters therapy because their life is being affected by thoughts, behaviours and emotions that are interfering with life functioning.

The therapist agrees to accompany the client on a journey of discovery about themselves and their way of being in the world. The purpose is to enhance self-awareness, encourage self-growth, heal wounding from the past, improve interpersonal relationships, move through life transitions, foster spiritual growth and mental health.

What is Pastoral Counselling?

Pastoral Counselling is a holistic approach to those seeking to use their faith perspective and expression of spirituality in the Counselling process. Pastoral Counselling takes into account the whole person - body, mind, spirit and emotions. As well there is a de-emphasis on pathology and a companioning by the therapist that is supportive of the clients' humanity and their soul's calling.

How Can I Benefit from Therapy / Counselling?

  • To become more self aware
  • To receive clarification on issues I am struggling with
  • To be empowered to take self-responsibility
  • To be aware of choices and the possibilities created by choices
  • To feel emotions and discover what they teach about my life's experience
  • To work through relationship and couple conflict

"To deny pain is to hold on to it. Only by going through it, allowing it, feeling it, speaking about it, can we learn from it and go on to feel joy and power in a new way."

Carol Pearson, The Hero Within.
